Hmm… Okay. This was all we could think of as a Christmas Day movie for my mom, my little cousin, my grandma and myself. It was actually pretty cute and amusing. It wasn’t even really bad, although I almost fell asleep at times. I like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson was adorable. There was a little Brokeback Mountain reference and the best part was a cameo by a certain actor of Chapelle Show fame. Carla Gugino was in it too and she is hot.

As for zee holiday, it was pleasant. I bought my mother a silver iPod Nano, David bought me a Cowon A2 30GB Video Player and I bought him a 20″ Dell Flatscreen monitor. Good Christmas.

Last Friday, Nancy H. and Kevin W. from work went Christmas Caroling with me at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Actually, it wasn’t as impromptu as it sounds. I actually sent an email out to all of DivX asking for volunteers to help cheer up patients who have to spend their holiday in the hospital. Unfortunately, a band of three is all we could manage. However with 4 extensive rehearsals, we got pretty far. We managed to have harmony or guitar accompaniment (I can only go as far as open chords) for every song.

It was a great experience. Jed, a hospital visitor who was there to see his parents, took some pictures of us. Nancy is getting me his card so I can email him tomorrow and ask for a copy. At that time, I will post more about our Christmas Caroling adventure!

Happy Belated Holidays!

Okay, this is the second movie in a row I did not want to see, but went anyway because David and Marley were going. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was The Pursuit of Happiness a touching, charming and clever movie, but now I have a newfound respect for Will Smith. I think the chemistry between him and his real-life son, Jayden (playing his son in the movie) really helped the emotions come across as sincere. The movie is really intense to me and probably alot of other people who grew up raised by single parents. I found myself rooting hard for the good guy, even though I know how this story ends (read this article about Chris Gardner, whom this story is based on). I high recomment this movie.

Watch the second 300 trailer with 1080 lines of resolution.

If your computer can’t handle the heat, you can view the 720p version (for faster loading). Double-click in the window once the video is playing to watch it full-screen.

Both videos require the FREE DivX Web Player.

Don’t forget. If you join Stage6, add me as a friend. I live by the thing, since I work at DivX. So I’ll probably accept your request within a day or two. You can upload your own high definition video files to Stage6, too.

Saw this tonight with David and Marlene. Excellent! I had not wanted to go, initially, but my curiosity won me over. A simple, yet engaging story. Amazing setting, costumes and music. Lots of themes for those who like discussing symbolism and whatnot. Great camera work. I highly suggest this movie. The change of locale, language and ethnicity was refreshing. Note: In true Gibson style, this movie does not hold back on violence and gore. You have been warned.

Rocked! I haven’t had such a fun time at the movies in years. A laugh riot. Go see it with a big crowd.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space has great behind-the-scenes footage of some very ’80s-looking effects. The DVD also features 8mm short films done by the directors when they were kids. Look for the Easter Eggs! It took me days to go through all the DVD content for Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. I could even read an earlier draft of the entire script.

Cannibal! The Musical is South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s first movie. You can also find footage of the live stage version put together by fans years later.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (USA) 1988, MGM Home Entertainment

List price: $14.95

Moulin Rouge (Australia/USA) 2001, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

List price: $29.98

Cannibal! The Musical (USA) 1996, Troma Team Video

List price: $24.95

That’s it for now, folks. Happy birthday to me!

You can see all the Star Wars trailers here:

Star Wars III Commercials

You can also see a music video that features a bunch of awesome footage from the movie.

Now specifically, on the linked page, you will find the Tragedy ad. In it, you will notice Anakin Skywalker has a scar on his face. It appears to be a long scratch on his right side. Where did that scratch come from? We’ll have to wait and find out. However, in one shot in the commercial, the scar is on the wrong side!

This is most likely due to the editor “flipping” the shot. This was done often in the old Star Wars movies and many fun bloopers have been pointed out in fan books and sites.

Um… I’m done now…

I don’t know what to say.It is very late at night and I have to wake up early tomorrow and go to Sacramento. I worked two different jobs today after school and am very tired. This is just too weird and sad. I feel terrible. I am in shock. This is so sad.

I’ll be back next week. Going to journalism conference until Sunday.

Let’s remember Leslie for what a great singer and actor he was. I loved him in The Bride With White Hair. Wong Kar-Wai must be sad.

A.I. Movie One-Sheet

I really liked this movie. I was very impressed. I had worried that Spielberg was going to turn Kubrick’s vision into some kid’s movie with corny lines. Thank god, there was actually only a handful of them in the whole movie. This was one of those films where I felt like I was transported into another dimension, where I felt fully submerged in the story and the world it existed in. It was very beautiful.

Janusz Kaninski is an excellent cinematographer as always. His love for light has produced some absolutely heavenly scenes filled with haze and grain that he is so good at using to enhance the beauty of film. Sometimes I forget how much richer and alive things look when shot on film as opposed to digital video…

The story was very interesting. It was sometimes disturbing, and I really liked how very different the second half is from the first. Jude Law was a very convincing robot, and Haley Joe Osment was incredibly endearing. He used to annoy me, but his fantastic transition from robot to real boy (in demeanor) verily changed my mind about him.

It did get a little slow during the beginning of the last third of the film (it’s a 2 and a half hour film), and sometimes I would wonder if the film was about to end. In a way, I thought this would have been cool because it really would have left the audience feeling weirded out and unfulfilled, hehe. But, the strange twist at the end. Rather, the great leap at the end was very interesting and very cool. I was quite touched by the plot, being a sci fi fan. The questions of robots and artificial intelligence, and a world that produces advanced versions of this was a great setting to introduce ethical issues. This film also gives this strange sense of being a mix of a hundred other stories. There were times I felt I was watching “E.T.”, whether from the constant moon theme, or the John Williams music. Besides the obvious, Pinnochio, I also caught strange reminders of “Bladerunner”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, and “TRON” believe it or not!!! Ask anyone whose seen this flick and they will probably relate to you at least three other films other than the ones I just mentioned that they were reminded of by this film.

If you have the patience to overlook the slow part, then watch this movie. The strange plot, moral issues, and beautiful cinematography will sweep you away into a different world, and you leave the theater either feeling good, depressed, or at least a little dazed. I really enjoyed this movie. It’s nice to see things that sway from Hollywood formula, especially from Spielberg. It’s definitely worth 4 stars.
